Wisconsin Dells is beginning to hold many good memories for teams from the Ice program. This weekend the 13 and 14 Purple teams added even more by capturing the Championships in their Gold divisions.
Leaving no doubt in any opponent’s minds, the 14 Purple charged their way through Saturday without dropping a single set and without libero Makayla Schildt due to a family emergency. They left Lake Effect Select 14 Silver, Club Fusion 13 White, Top Ten 14-1 and Green Bay Jrs 14-1 frozen in their tracks. (moose tracks?)
Celebrating their victory, the team and their parents headed to Moosejaw where Kia was overheard singing something about a moose swimming in the water and decomposing… Shaefer and Taylor were determined to make a scene pulling up their sweats way too high and then making their hair look SO ummm…intellectual? It was a good thing the waitress had a particularly good sense of humor and very fast waitress plate removal skills. ? Finally a cool head prevailed and they were sent home to bed. (aka swimming) Sunday brought tougher competition. Dropping their first set to Southwest VBC, the team rallied to win the match. Semi-finals brought them up against Burlington Elite 14 Orange which saw the first set go to Ice, the second set go to Elite 28-26, and then the third set brought history in the making to the club!! Setter Peyton Stefan served 6 aces before the Elite coach called a time out. She then served 2 more to make the switch at 8. After that, she served to 10 and the coach called another time out. Did she choke?? Did she cave under the pressure?? ABSOLUTELY NOT !! She went out and served the team to the 14th point, at which time, Shelly made sure to tell the entire team they were to NOT let this ball drop! Peyton served up the 15th point, but the shut out eluded the team. Final score was 15-4, placing 14 Purple in the finals. Did we say finals?? Yes, finals!! Out of 40 teams, 2 were left and one of them was 14 Purple!! Facing another Fusion team, Boorse the Workhorse, served mighty jump floats to pull out the first set, 25-23. Then working together as one, the team ran up the score to 22-22 only to fall 22-25. 14 Purple was not to be denied this championship however, and following several strategic kills by Annie, Clara and Vanessa, many great digs by Rachel and Allison, and all the energy they could muster, the champions in them came out and a 15-5 win made for our very first Ice team to win the Diggin’ in the Dells Tournament. Well done ladies and well done parents! You are fabulous fans and wonderful supporters of your daughters and Ice. |
